DO YOU WANT TO ACE YOUR ONLINE JOB INTERVIEW? Well, of course, you do!
You’ve done your research, you’ve rehearsed your value proposition, and you know you’re the perfect fit for the job and the company. You’re looking sharp – from the top down to the bottom (yes, that means dress shoes, pants, or a skirt). All that’s left is crushing the online interview, and here are six simple ways to do it 👉👉👉
♠ Test your technology well in advance of the interview. There’s nothing like trying to sign on five minutes before your meeting only to discover your connection isn’t working or egads! – you can’t find the meeting link. The last thing you need is to break into a sweat before you’ve even started.
♠ What’s in the background? An unmade bed, dirty dishes, or used pizza boxes aren’t the look you want. Consider using a virtual background but keep it neutral and static – just because you’re applying for an airline manager position doesn’t mean it’s okay to have airplanes buzzing overhead.
♠ Most employers understand the challenges of working from home, but when it comes to kids and pets, they gotta go when you’re interviewing. Let the grandparents spoil them while you focus on getting the position.
♠ Keep your eye on the camera and not on the face of the interviewer. Consider using two monitors, positioning a larger one behind the other. While opening your resume on the forward screen, adjust the one at the rear so the interviewer’s face appears immediately above the camera (hint – It’s also a great way to refer to your notes without anyone knowing the difference!).
♠ Practice! Practice! Practice! Record yourself over and over, and seriously critique your performance, looking for the habits (hair twirling), facial expressions (grimacing), or the um’s and ah’s that we often repeat and display but are completely blind to.
When it’s interview time, turn on the lights (so they’re facing you), and then lean in, smile 😊, and relax. You’ve got this!
